Alright! I was recently able to see the Greatest Showman, and let me say: It was okay. Not as bad as the RT score is (55% Critics, 88% Audience), but not as good as I had been led to believe. Let me get the pros off my chest first:
1. I liked most of the songs
This is Me, the Greatest Show, The Other Side, Never Enough, and A Million Dreams (I probably got those song names wrong. Sorry). They didn't exactly sound like songs from the 1850s, more like a modern day song, but it was released in the modern day, so that makes sense. Artistic License is one thing, but this is something different altogether.
2. I liked the cast
Believe it or not, this is the first movie I've seen with Zac Efron.
Cons:
1. The movie IS a con
P.T. Barnum first got the idea for a tent circus in his 60s. Also, he and Jenny Lind never kissed (She left due to Marketing controversies. They were still able to make the money back), and they made up most of the characters (Zac Efron, the bearded lady, and Zendaya). Conning people who lived 170 years ago is one thing, but this is the modern age.
2. Plot was predictable
In the first 15 minutes, I was able to accurately tell the plot. Guy gets fame, loses it, makes a couple of people mad, his wife leaves with the kids, his sideshow "Freaks" comfort him, and he is able to rebuild his franchise. Once they added the Jenny Lind sideplot, I was also able to accurately tell why his wife left.
3. The Plot has already been made
If the plot sounds familiar, that's because it was also the plot of Sing, the 2016 animated film. Guy gets fame, loses it, his acts comfort him, and he rebuilds his fame.
Then, at the end, he leaves his ambition (His show) to go back to his daughters, AT A BALLET RECITAL!!!!! This was Despicable Me! In short, it was Sing with extra hormones.
My thoughts: The Greatest Showman may be a mess, but that doesn't mean it can't be a fun one.
