Alright! I've been gone for a bit, lost the computer-internet-thing, and I'm back! In the New York Groove!
I recently saw Aquaman, and it's time I shared my thoughts on it:
I really, really wanted Aquaman to be Lord of the Rings and Thor: Ragnarok, but it was just Aquaman. It's really what you would expect, maybe a bit more and less on some sides of the spectrum.
Let's start with the disappointments, or criticisms:
The entire movie is a sideplot
A good solid hour and a half of Aquaman is just Aquaman getting a trident. Yes, from trailers we could see this would happen, but it's literally more than half the movie.
Plotholes
In particular, one plothole: Aquaman and Mera find the map to the trident in the desert: it is never explained how they are able to walk the entire Sahara in less than a week. And, if Atlantis could dispel the trash from the ocean, why weren't they already doing that? And, they light a flare, and then carry it into the ocean. Doesn't fire extinguish when it gets wet?
Ocean Master's hair
In Atlantis, everyone's hair is wavy and awesome looking. Except for Orm the Ocean Master. However, when it is shown on dry land, his hair looks awesome! But for most of the movie it's pulled back, like a Draco Malfoy cosplayer.
It's long
The movie feels loooooooooooooooooong.
The stakes never seem real
Unfortunately, Aquaman's stakes never really seem like a danger: In the first couple minutes of the film, Ocean Master raises the oceans and tosses out the garbage. That was awesome. But the rest of the movie is just CGI armies.
The dialogue
Oh my gosh. The dialogue in this movie is so insanely expositional that it's like they're reading a textbook. Willem Dafoe really gets the short end of the bargain; I can only see him as Green Goblin, and he recites dialogue like he's bored.
It's cheesy
Aquaman has so many tropes and cliches that you can already predict the ending in the first five minutes of the movie. And they treat the fact that his mom's alive like it's a big reveal, even though Nicole Kidman is clearly listed as a main cast member.
But it also has some pros:
Aquaman
Jason Momoa's Aquaman is the hero that the ocean deserves and needs. He is so awesome looking, it actually makes sense how Green Lantern is now the butt of Justice League jokes, even though Green Lantern is one of the most powerful members.
It's awesome to look at
The cinematography and cool shots in this film more than make up for all those cons. This movie is so awesome to look at, in the beginning, they zoom in on Aquaman as he jumps out of the water and onto a sub, and that's awesome. It shows Ocean Master in front of some turbines, and that's awesome. It shows Aquaman and Mera jumping into the ocean with a flare, and that's awesome. The colors just blend together like a Bob Ross painting; that is, to say, perfectly.
The cast
Jason Momoa. Amber Heard. Nicole Kidman. Willem Dafoe. Julie Andrews. Do I need more names?
The villains
In the beginning of the movie, Aquaman makes the decision not to save a badguy, something that leads to Black Manta being created. That was tough. Another thing I liked was how they did not kill off Ocean Master.
The humor
This is a pro and a con. Sometimes, the humor is dumb. Other times, it's really funny. In the beginning of the film, a bunch of tough guys ask Aquaman for a selfie. That was hilarious. And Atlantis has a pros and cons board for Aquaman v Ocean Master, where Aquaman has no pros.
The fight scenes
Aquaman sometimes is like a video game and is sometimes like an epic; the action shots seem like video game cut scenes, but sometimes they seem like awesome Ben-Hur shots.
All in all, I would rate it at about 6/10, with an opinion of,
"Aquaman is epic. It's also cheesy, a blast, and has awesome cinematography. So it's basically exactly what you were expecting."
