Alright! Today I am reviewing Netflix's new original series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Picking up 50 years before the Dark Crystal, this show details how the Skeksis rose to the point they are at in the movie.
This series is often described as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones with puppets. And I could not agree more. This series delves so much into the mythology and world of Thra so much more than the movie did (Or could). Characters die, the tone is a sad hopeful, and this series is not afraid to show how evil the Skeksis are.
And the show is a technical masterpiece as well; these puppets move around and look so real it's actually awesome. CGI is used minimally (To remove puppeteers), and you can tell. This has a very unique style. This looks awesome.
Even if a cool story and excellent quality don't interest you, just watching the puppets should.
So, minor spoilers here (Basically episodes one and two):
The series starts with a Gelfling, Rian, finding out that the Skeksis are draining people's essence using the Crystal.
That's nice.
However, this leads to a twist; someone they were setting up as a main character, Rian's gf, actually gets her essence drained in the first episode. I was shocked. I wasn't expecting it, and it was very bold.
Bigger spoilers (Like, episodes 1-9)
I would say the one thing that the series lacked was an amazing musical theme. It needs a strong theme. The one time the theme really stuck out was when the Arathim took over the entire clan. That was a very good score. And when the mom died.
Something I did like, however, was the Mystics. The Mystics in this show were pretty cool.
This is a series I would like to see more of. Not because I need answers as to how it ends, but just because I really enjoyed it. Most shows end with a tease for the next season. So does this one, but I already know what happens (Unfortunately) and so it's not really a hype type deal. It's just I want to see more puppets. This was a really good series.
Go watch it.
Overall Opinion: "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is an exceptionally good series that not only respects what the Dark Crystal was, but also doubles down on it. And that is so cooool."

My new favorite character is Hup (Right). If he dies, I die with him. |
