Frozen II - Review

Alright! Today I am reviewing the sequel to the pop culture phenomenon, Frozen, that is Frozen II.

Currently with a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes (94% Audience Score) and $350 million in the bank, this sequel is... a movie. It's a good movie, but just a movie.

It's not good, it's not bad, it's just nice (Into the Woods reference! Score!)

Basically, the problems with Frozen II are the convoluted plot and unmemorable songs. While the first movie had nine songs, eight of which are good (Fixer Upper just sucks), this movie has eight songs, six of which are good (Opening exposition songs just don't cut it), and three of those I would listen to.

But of course, comparing this to Frozen really doesn't do anything. Frozen was an extreme anomaly in that the soundtrack, lack of competition, and a legitimately good story allowed Disney, and children, to over saturate everyone with it.

I would also point out how Frozen II has the lowest critical reception since Meet the Robinsons. Disney's had a good run these past years, and it seems Frozen II was especially a project of financial obligations.

Just refresh the marketing department. Because they need more with Baby Yoda and whatnot.

The new characters of Frozen II are ultimately unnecessary, although I did like General Matthias, a great new character with a disappointing amount of screentime.

(Minor spoiler alerts)

There are twists in the movie that you don't see coming, but they're not twists you care about like Hans.

Hans was a good twist because we had already fallen in love with him. Pre made Prince Charming! And then he's evil, it's a blow. We curse ourselves for instantly believing the love at first sight meeting always works. For most of these, the twists involve characters that are dead, so we don't really care about it and have already seen the consequences of that action.

But ultimately Frozen II is a good movie. I would recommend it. It has a lot of problems, but I think it's a good and ultimately worthwhile new story to add to Frozen.

It's definitely not another pop culture, kids will be singing about it for years, type of problem. It's more a unnecessary sequel problem.

Overall Opinion: 7/10, "It's impossible to not say that Frozen II has a lot of problems. It's a bit more than mediocre, a bit less iconic, and a bit darker than the first - and maybe a bit better?."
