So, today I am reviewing Onward. Why now? Well, when it came out, I wasn't able to see it opening weekend (Forensics happens, okay?), but thanks to the good folks at Disney HQ, it is available on Disney+, and, yeah. That's the story.
Oh, and also, no new posts for a while/Far fewer posts, because both of my parents work from home now (Yay?), so the computer is a rare commodity to come across.
So, Onward, the newest Pixar film that everyone had doubts about because it looked like a more "Meh" Pixar film, along the lines of Brave and Monsters University. And, yeah. It was received, more or less, as a "Meh" Pixar film.
But I liked it.
Actually, I really liked it. It was good, but it wasn't exactly the "Animation defining work of art" that most Pixar films are (Up, Inside Out, Coco, Toy Stories, etc), so, yeah. It was good. And sometimes, that's enough.
Most of the time, I'm not too into "Road Trip" movies. At all. I rather dislike them, actually. But there are some good ones, but most are okay at best. So this was my one big doubt about the film, and I figured, based on trailers, that the point where the film would go south was once they met the biker gang.

Biker gangs are infamous road trip stereotypes, and are most often in the film as a way to stretch the plot out, and thus are very unenjoyable. But in this film? In this film, the biker gang rocked. The action scene that the biker fairies are in, were, frankly, way better than they had any right to be.
My expectations were subverted thoroughly. |
But, moving on to my major gripe with the movie (Other than that it dared to be a road trip flick), is that I was expecting it to be a lot funnier. I'm not sure how funny I thought it was going to be, but I thought it would be funnier when you have Chris Pratt in it, and when he's acting with Tom Holland. I was expecting more humor. The movie had humor in it, but I was expecting, like, a comedy, basically. So that's on me.
I would totally recommend Onward. Onward is a good film with a lot of heart, a bit of humor, likable characters, and an ending.
Oh, yeah. The ending. The ending of the film, I'm not going to completely spoil it, but man. That was such a good ending. You know what I'm talking about, right? The part where we cried?
Yeah?
Yeah.
Overall Opinion: 8/10, "While Onward is not the best Pixar film, the film's redeemable qualities, mixed with great animation, likable characters, and heartbreaking premise make Onward a fine addition to Pixar's collection."
