Luca Review!

Alright! You know, most of the time I publish my movie reviews fairly soon after the movie is released. But for Luca, I decided to just throw it into the schedule, because I needed content and I didn't care enough to release it as its own big thing.

Luca is the newest movie from Pixar to be tossed onto Disney+ after Soul (Which, after backlash from the studio, has guaranteed next year's Turning Red gets a theatrical release). It was released about a month ago with positive reviews.

So... I can't say that I didn't like Luca. It's a good movie. But I also can't really say I loved Luca

Okay, this is confusing. Basically, Luca has no real weaknesses. It's an absolutely solid movie that your kids will like (And one that you'll probably gain enjoyment from as well). Luca also has no real strengths. It's unremarkable.

Luca is an extremely simplistic story about two best friends who try to win a race. It's an hour and a half long, has a cartoon villain with no motivations, fun scenes, sad scenes, and has a nice vibe to it. So while it remains a good movie, there's nothing special about it.

The animation, for the most part, is good. It's decidedly not Soul levels of amazing, but it's good and fits the simple story. It's honestly one of the best parts of the film, the lush and stylized art.

It's also one of the worst? Again, no strengths or weaknesses. Maybe the simple story and characters would have been made better if they were always a visual delight.

But by far and away, my least favorite part of the movie was the character designs. Pixar finally devolves into the stupid bean head trend of 2010s American animation. It's the worst and I absolutely hate it. It's definitely reminiscent of Wallace and Gromit

Basically, this is what me complimenting the movie would be like:

  • The story has emotion present.
  • The animation is acceptable.
  • The plot is perfectly fine.
  • The characters are likable.
  • There's humor present throughout the film (But nothing too funny).
  • The villain serves as the antagonist of the story.
  • The film qualifies as a movie.

And I can't really say anything negative about it other than I didn't find it amazing. And because of that, it coasts by on being "just" likable.

And that's more or less I have to say about it. I'll forget it in about a day. Shoot, I barely remembered to update my Ranking Every Pixar Film post to include it (Where I ranked it above The Good Dinosaur but below Cars 2).

Overall, I give Luca a 6/10. "With no discernible strengths or weaknesses, Luca is just a perfectly average movie."

I enjoyed the feel of the concept art much more than the final product. Much more.
