Alright! Spider-Man's rogue gallery is, by far, the most well-known in Marvel comics, maybe comics in general, second only to Batman. You have a trio of archnemesis running alongside lesser-known but still beloved characters like Silver Sable. And despite every new Spidey movie adapting a different villain, we still have a plethora of incredible characters that most audiences don't know.
So that's what I'm doing today. I'm dishing out Spider-Man villains that the movies haven't really utilized (Or maybe they did, just not well). We've even got some obscure folks on here for the more diehard Marvel fans.
And with Spider-Man: No Way Home giving several previously wasted villains the chance to shine again - namely, The Lizard and Electro, I thought this was a great time to go back and appreciate his well-rounded villains.
Sandman
Yes, technically Sandman already appeared in Spider-Man 3. And he might be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But he deserves a chance to shine! This scene speaks volumes about the depths to which a Sandman story could be told. He could easily go down as one of the genre's best villains with proper direction.
Mister Negative
Even if the backstory doesn't enthrall you, the visual aspects of the character are undoubtedly exciting. |
Best known for his role in the PS4 Spider-Man, Mister Negative is an excellent (And relatively unknown) addition to Spidey's rogues. The subject of an unfortunate experiment, a man is divided into two polar opposites: Mr. Li, a benevolent philanthropist, and Mr. Negative, a ruthless crime boss trying to control the underbelly of NYC.
Scorpion
People online seem to really hype up Scorpion, which I guess is cool? He was hinted at in Spider-Man: Homecoming's post-credit scene and a cameo in Spider-Verse, so he's bound to appear at some point. Marc Gargan is hired by J. Jonah Jameson to undergo a dangerous procedure that gives him unremovable scorpion-themed armor. I'm not his biggest fan, but there is some appeal in such a wacky character becoming a serious threat.
Kingpin
Okay, I know we already have two perfect Kingpins - Vincent D'Onofrio and Spider-Verse's bulking menace. But is it too much to ask that we have a live-action Kingpin face off against Spidey? It has to happen, it's too cool of an idea to not! Team up with Daredevil!
Black Cat
Out of all the villains that need to be used in a movie, Black Cat is the #1 choice. One of Spider-Man's few female villains, Black Cat serves as Marvel's Catwoman, an antihero thief who flirts with our uncaped crusader. Felicia Hardy is one of Parker's principal love interests, part of his infamous "Parker Luck." If I had to place a bet on the next Spidey villain, it's Black Cat. She's too popular to not be used at some point.
Chameleon
Dmitri Smerdyakov, also known as the Chameleon, is a master of disguise that can impersonate anybody. This was Spider-Man's first rogue, appearing all the way back when in 1963. While he was technically included in Spider-Man: Far From Home, that version of the character was... a loose interpretation at best. Shapeshifting villains are always fun, give the guy a chance, Feige.
Carnage
Hey! We just got a Carnage movie! Why yes, yes we did. But what we really need is a Venom and Spider-Man team-up versus Carnage - or, better idea! Spider-Man v Venom: Dawn of the Symbiote, where they both fight after a few brushes and then team up to stop Carnage, the mutual enemy!
Rhino
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already had a Rhino, and yes, I know that interpretation is iconic and considered to have reinvented the entire superhero genre as we know it, but I think we can improve. We just need some dude, preferably Arnold Schwarzenegger from the 1980s, in a grey skintight suit with a giant rhino horn on his head. Boom, icon. The voice of his generation.
Hobgoblin
Again, barring rumors of an alternate universe Ned appearing in No Way Home as Hobgoblin, Hobgoblin is another one of these obscure villains that would be fun to have taken seriously as a threat. He's like an off-brand Green Goblin, a good precursor to the Osborn crazy.
Grey Gargoyle
Grey Gargoyle is one of Marvel's silliest villains, a King Midas with the powers of Medusa. His costume is ridiculous, his origin even more so. He's just so wacky and obscure it would be hard to take him seriously. He's perfect for a cameo as a side henchman in Spider-Verse 2 or something, it would just be fun.
Kraven the Hunter
Kraven's getting his own movie, so look forward to that in 2023. I mean, the ideal story is still him as a multiverse jumping villain (Played by Jason Momoa) trying to kill every version of Spider-Man that forces Tom, Tobey, and Andrew together. But hey! He's already getting a movie! That speaks for itself! The hunter who can hunt anything set on his greatest prey: Spider-Man.
Silver Sable
After becoming a breakout character in the PS4 Spider-Man game, Silver Sable is also a prime candidate for the silver screen, even with a long-gestating movie/TV show in the works. An ally, enemy, and romantic interest to Spider-Man, Silvija Sablinova is a mercenary for hire that occasionally bumps into our neighborhood hero.
Beetle
Beetle wouldn't solo his own movie, just as starters. He'd work best as a henchman for a larger villain like Norman Osborn that gets the plot moving (Akin to Zam Wessel in Attack of the Clones) or as a montage villain to give fans an easter egg. He's a master mechanic who builds himself a super-suit to gain riches and honor through theft and hired jobs. Like I said, best as a henchman or easter egg.
Morlun
Remember when I said Kraven jumping across dimensions trying to kill Spider-lings would be a cool movie? Morlun is literally the interdimensional spider hunter, a being from Earth-001 whose sole existence is to find a "totem" (Cross between man and beast) that can serve as a host. His attempt to stay alive leads to famous storylines such as the Spider-Verse comic arc. Pretty cinematic, dimension-hopping pyschopath.
Jackal
Miles Warren is a scientist in love with Gwen Stacy who, after her passing, blames Spider-Man for her death. Struck with grief, he starts a new purpose in life: To hurt Spider-Man. He does this through an assortment of genetic creations and eventually mixes his own genes to create a very strange man-jackal hybrid. But he's best known for cloning Peter Parker in the Clone Saga story, which leads to Scarlet Spider's creation. I'd watch the crap out of a Spider-Man: The Clone Saga movie.
The Spot
Remember that scene in The Yellow Submarine where the Beatles enter the Sea of Holes, and it's a totally trippy wonder? Imagine that, but it's a giant fight scene with Spider-Man. I always love that wormhole type-imagery like Incredibles II and Days of Future Past had. Just imagine the logistics of the web shooting out every which way.
