The Ten Best Films of 2020

Alright! 2020 has been...  a year, that's for sure. On one hand, it's dragged and dragged. On the other, it went by really fast. 2020 will most likely be defined by the major events that happened in it - The Presidential Election, murder hornets, the unexpected deaths of Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant, and Kirby Morrow, and of course COVID-19.

Covid heavily impacted movies. So many movies that should've come out this year were tossed out to next year. If 2020 didn't blow, this list would likely have movies like Black Widow, Eternals, Dune, A Quiet Place Part II, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Raya and the Last Dragon, Godzilla vs. Kong, and maybe even Free Guy on it. Alas, this is what fate has rolled out to us.

In fact, the year was so bad that Artemis Fowl, which I gave a 0/10, almost made the list. Thank goodness they didn't delay WW84, because then that would've happened.

10. Sonic the Hedgehog

Overall Opinion: 4/10. "With uninspired.... everything... Sonic the Hedgehog passes off as passable thanks to some good CGI and Jim Carrey."

Overall Opinion: 6/10. " Enola Holmes is good enough without going above and beyond while also never becoming a stale imitation. It's basically what you'd expect."

Overall Opinion: 6/10. "Bill & Ted Face the Music is good - but not excellent."

7. Mulan

Overall Opinion: 6/10. "Though it may boast beautiful shots and excellent cinematography, Mulan doesn't do anything different enough to warrant an existence outside of a cash grab remake."

6. Tenet

Overall Opinion: 7/10. "While it may not explore it's idea as much as it could or should have, Tenet zips by on exciting explosions and cool enough ideas to be an exceptionally fun spy thriller."

5. The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special

Overall Opinion: 8/10. "Relentless gags, surprising quality, and neverending levity make The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special a surprisingly good use of 47 minutes.

Overall Opinion: 8/10. "Full to the brim with hope, love, and a genuine belief in the good of humanity, Wonder Woman 1984 isn't a perfect movie, but is very much enjoyable, mostly thanks to Pedro Pascal's incredible performance."

Overall Opinion: 8/10. "Soul has a lot of big questions to ask and great characters to give resolutions to. Unfortunately, not all of the answers and payoffs it delivers will satisfy."

2. Onward

Overall Opinion: 8/10. "While Onward is not the best Pixar film, the film's redeemable qualities, mixed with great animation, likable characters, and a heartbreaking premise make Onward a fine addition to Pixar's collection."

1. Hamilton

Overall Opinion: 9/10. "Though not without its faults, the filmed production of Hamilton not only feels like a dream, but is a surefire win for everyone watching."

So while Hamilton was most definitely the best movie I saw this year, I'm going to have to give my pick for favorite movie of the year to Onward, which my low expectations for blew me away when I saw it.

And you know what? Let's try and imagine what this list would've looked like if everything hadn't been delayed.

Some honorable mentions for this list include Godzilla vs. Kong (6/10) and Free Guy (7/10), which just barely didn't make the cut.

10. Raya and the Last Dragon - 7/10

9. Eternals: 7/10

8. Tenet - 7/10

7. Black Widow - 8/10

6. Ghostbusters: Afterlife - 8/10

5. Wonder Woman 1984- 8/10

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special - I included it this year to bump Artemis Fowl off the list. If this year was full of semi-competent blockbusters, I would've left it off.

4. Soul - 8/10

3. Onward - 8/10

Hamilton - I excluded this because if everything had gone according to plan, it would've released in 2021.

2. A Quiet Place Part II - 10/10

1. Dune - 10/10
